General FAQ

What services do you offer?

We offer 1-on-1 coaching for both Functional Health and Somatic work. (See each one’s service page to see how they’re different.) Separately, we offer group coaching for Somatics as a more affordable option.

We also regularly hold workshops guiding a valuable blend of both Functional Health and Somatics. These workshops are a more affordable option that are not personalized like coaching is, yet are still interactive & actionable. They range from 1 day events to several weekly sessions.

Why is there group coaching only for somatics?

With somatic group coaching, attendees can practice general techniques as a group because somatic techniques are typically helpful to all types of people, and need only small personalized adjustments.

In contrast, the functional health coaching we provide is entirely dependent on an individual’s musculoskeletal measurements, lifestyle, muscle imbalances, & goals. It would be potentially harmful to teach stretches or exercises to a group without knowing first how it will affect their exact muscle & skeletal setup.

(This is a risk with generalized fitness & personal training classes.)

How do I get started?

Schedule a consultation call—no cost— to meet us and see if it's the right fit for you. After that, we’ll walk you through the next steps and answer any questions along the way.

What makes you different?

A lot. We provide integrative, whole-person wellness coaching that looks at more than just the physical or mental. Combining our two genres of services gives an even more comprehensive care plan.

We’re queer-owned & specifically inclusive. We care about people a great deal more than we care about money. We come from scientific backgrounds which we blended with the “woo-woo” side of things.

There’s a lot of coolness here, how about you come get to know us personally and determine for yourself?

How do I contact you?

We have emails, inquiry-submission, and free consultation calls available in our Contact page. Genuine questions are welcome, encouraged, and appreciated! Curious folx and those just trying to find their best path are invited to schedule consultation calls with us - we’ll help you get where best serves you.

Also, to get a feel for us, you may join any of our events! See upcoming ones on our Events page.

What drives you?

We're part of this world too. We both see people sick, stressed, and suffering all around us. We both have experienced some of the worst, and have struggled through the same hurt system that all of us is in.

With years of searching and being open to deep answers, we've both been able to make amazing breakthroughs in our own health and wellbeing. It's never "done" just as we're never done eating or breathing, but it's an amazing and truly worthwhile journey. One that everyone is entitled to. And we're determined to do our very best to uplift countless others into breaking out of the hurt cycle too.

Functional Health Coaching FAQ

How is this different from personal training?

Personal training follows a very, very different protocol. It’s very risky as it does not teach trainers to look at the full picture of what affects a person’s ability to move, be energized, or handle what they’re being told to do. It does not look at their muscle imbalances in full (which affects stretches, stability, injury), their diet & lifestyle (which affects if your gut is inflamed & cannot become healthy abs; as well as what neergy & nutrients you have to work with), etc.

We do look at these things. Our functional health coach knows what to look for, knows what stretches & exercises not to put you through, and knows what other health professionals you do actually need to see. These are vital in supporting your health without desperately cutting out fats or “just working out harder.”

Can I purchase 1 session at a time, not a package?

We sell only in packages because it is vital that you are committed to your process. Consistency is required to really see the results we promise to deliver, and to make the benefits life-lasting. Therefore 3 months is the minimum to reasonably offer for this personalized process.

What can I expect when working with you?

Session 1, Intake Assessment, begins with with an in-depth assessment of your current health and wellbeing by utilizing questionnaires and a physical examination. This involves taking measurements of key relationships in your body structure - spine, flexibility, muscle tension, posture, etc - that will be used to develop a completely personalized and highly specific program for you. Following sessions will be focused on guiding you through the program and teaching you key aspects of living in wellbeing.

Sessions are roadmapped based on your assessment, but are adapted to your needs as you progress or as changes happen.

We'll reassess (just like Session 1) every ~8 weeks, to check your progress and update your program to keep you on the fastest path to reaching your goals.

Why do you need to do all these assessments?

Have you ever been frustrated in PE class, following a yoga video, or trying an exercise routine, because you're told to just do it right and it doesn't seem to work the same for you?

You are unique. Everyone is. No two people have the exact same proportions, muscle balances, etc. You've also had your own share of injuries, stressors, position habits, nutrient intake... all of which affect just what stretches & exercises your body can do, needs, or needs to avoid.

Generalized workouts are harmful to follow and cannot personalize to what your specific body needs. As CHEK professionals say - "if we're not assessing, we're guessing." And your health is not something to throw guesses at.

What does the physical assessment entail?

I will be measuring your head forward posture, first rib angle, spinal curve, and pelvic tilt. Part of this means assessing your body alignment and balance, which involves standing in front of a vertical line. With informed consent, I will need to pinpoint specific spots on the hipbone and spine by hand. This is very important to measure your posture, which is vital to assessing and correcting pain & imbalance, reducing risk of injury & illness, as well as for optimizing comfort & ability.

How is your approach personalized?

I take into account your current health status & history, injury history, environmental & lifestyle factors, etc to tailor your program to your specific needs and dream. The Assessment conducted in Session 1 will inventory all these factors, including very specific measurements of the musculoskeletal system's needs and limits.

This informs both you and I, not only on what your body and lifestyle need in order to feel relief and wellness, but what routes to achieving it fit you best. This puts you on the fastest track possible to achieve your goals, while putting you at much lower risk of injury or burnout. Our approach makes changes more attainable and sustainable.

Why do you focus on my dream?

I focus all my work with you around your dream, or your 1 Love. This is very important to keeping your program sustainable to where you are each day, to avoid burnout, and to support your achievements.

What is it like to work with you?

Thoughtful, empathetic, educational. I am a very kind & easygoing guide who has an intuitive understanding of this work, and a deep care for others. I'll work alongside you with compassion for your challenges, gentleness for your pace & abilities, and strength for encouraging you with the personalized program you need.

How is this different from yoga, energy work, etc?

Integrative somatic work does incorporate yoga, types of energy work, and more (to the extent any one person wants to explore these), but is not focused on these modalities. It is a blend of many modalities - including adapted exercises from CBT & other therapies - built together under a spiritual science of the mind body connection.

How is this different from therapy?

I am not a licensed therapist, meaning I cannot and would not diagnose or treat mental illnesses or psychiatric conditions. Therapists and mental health workers who practice licensed psychotherapy etc do this, and are also trained to dive into mental and memory work more, and handle more serious experiences than I am. That is not my calling.

The work I do with clients is guiding them through calming techniques, gentle self-introspection practices, and skill-building to help them empower themselves and create a better, more balanced and connected life. This does involve safe levels of self-guided techniques gathered from numerous modalities such as SAFE EMDR, CBT, DBT and more, compiled by a master somatic practitioner and naturopathic doctor, Dr. Rachel Dew.

How does a 1-on-1 coaching plan go?

Our first session, called Intake, involves us talking about your experience. Pains, symptoms, past, present, what you're going through and what you are wanting. You'll share whatever you're open to sharing,  and I will ask deeper questions aimed at understanding you better and finding links and key points that will help you on your journey. Then I'll suggest a technique or two for you try out during our session, based on your preferences and experiences.

Following sessions entail us building you a somatic plan together, through trying out various techniques, exploring what comes up for you, and checking in on changes and outcomes. You'll be able to walk away each day with tools and information that you'll have available within yourself from then onwards .

How does group coaching go?

Our first 2 sessions involve all of us (about 6 participants plus myself) getting to know each other, and me coming to understand each of your experiences and goals. Pains, symptoms, past, present, what you're going through and what you are wanting. You'll each share whatever you're open to sharing, taking turns, and I will ask deeper questions aimed at understanding you better and finding links and key points that will help you on your journey. Then I'll suggest a technique or two for the group to try during both sessions, based on preferences and experiences.

Following sessions entail us building each of you a somatic plan, through trying out various techniques, exploring what comes up for you, and checking in on changes and outcomes. You'll be able to walk away each day with tools and information that you'll have available within yourself from then onwards.

What is it like working with you?

Supported, warm, welcoming, and calm. I am very genuine and kind, and am so happy and grateful to provide a positive experience and safe space for you to be heard without judgement, cure mentality, or an agenda. I encourage you to just be yourself. And I help you figure out how to do it in a way that's happier and more balanced for you.
